The Neuromolecular Mechanisms That Coordinate Food Availability with C. elegans Male Sexual Behavior. (August 2008) Todd R. Gruninger, B.S., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. L. Rene Garcia Organisms must coordinate behavioral and physiological responses to changing environmental conditions. In the nematode C. elegans, the presence or absence of food in the environment affects many metabolic and behavioral responses, including fat homeostasis, lifespan, and male mating. Specifically, male mating behavior normally occurs when a well-nourished male encounters a hermaphrodite, and is repressed if the male is under-nourished. To understand how environmental changes influence the drive to carry out specific behavioral tasks, I used C. elegans male mating as a model. Previously, mutants were isolated that display male mating behavior at inappropriate times, i.e. in the absence of mating cues. Loss of function mutations in the ERG K channel, UNC-103, results in spontaneous seizures of the male sex muscles. Interestingly, I found that food deprivation can suppress unc-103(lf)-induced seizures, suggesting that pathways activated under this environmental condition can suppress the excitability of the mating circuit. Using molecular, genetic, and behavioral assays, I identified sensory and molecular mechanisms that reduce sex-muscle excitability under food-deprived

Sensory Regulation of C. elegans Male Mate-Searching Behavior

How do animals integrate internal drives and external environmental cues to coordinate behaviors? We address this question by studying mate-searching behavior in C. elegans. C. elegans males explore their environment in search of mates (hermaphrodites) and will leave food if mating partners are absent. However, when mates and food coincide, male exploratory behavior is suppressed and males are ...

Mate searching in Caenorhabditis elegans: a genetic model for sex drive in a simple invertebrate.

Much of animal behavior is regulated to accomplish goals necessary for survival and reproduction. Little is known about the underlying motivational or drive states that are postulated to mediate such goal-directed behaviors. Here, we describe a mate-searching behavior of the Caenorhabditis elegans male that resembles the motivated behaviors of vertebrates. Adult C. elegans males, if isolated fr...

Male sexual behavior does not require elevated testosterone in a lizard (Coleonyx elegans, Eublepharidae).

Male sexual behavior depends on gonadal androgens in species of all major vertebrate lineages, including reptiles. However, male sexual behavior includes distinct appetitive and consummatory phases, typically denoted as courtship and mounting, with potentially different hormonal control. Different proximate controls of courtship versus mounting could enable disconnected evolutionary losses and ...

Effect of Vitamin C, as an Antioxidant, on Immobilization-Induced Changes in Sexual Behavior and Sperm Count in Male Mice

Sexual behavior in males is vulnerable to stress and it has been suggested that alterations in sexual behavior during stress is concomitant with spermatogenesis dysfunction. In this study, we investigated the effects of immobilization on sexual behavior and whether or not these effects are accompanied by changes in spermatogenesis process. The effect of antioxidant treatment on the sexual behav...

Determination of the effects of food preservatives benzoic acid and sodium nitrate on lifespan, fertility and physical growth in Caenorhabditis elegans

Presently, the use of protective food additives such as benzoic acid and sodium nitrate is quite common. However, it was found that these additives, which initially appeared to be harmless, led to the emergence of a number of health problems. Cancer and diseases and deaths with no apparent causes are among the leading concerns. Therefore, the studies which can reveal the genotoxic potential of ...
